What can you claim with a Health Spending Account?

What can you claim under a Health Spending Account? We get this question a lot! Luckily, the answer is pretty simple - eligible items are determined by the Canada Revenue Agency .

A common way to describe eligible health items are to categorize them as belonging to health, dental or vision expense categories and then expenses are divided into sub-categories from there. The list of eligible items is quite extensive and certain items may require supporting documents, like a prescription from a doctor for medication or for proof that the expense is medically necessary.

The eligible expense submitted is the amount you are out of pocket. For example, if you paid $100 for a chiropractic appointment and you have insurance coverage at 80%, your insurance would cover $80 of the expense and then you could submit the remaining $20 to your HSA for reimbursement.

Some of the most common claims we see with health spending accounts are dental exams, dental repairs like fillings & root canals, prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses, laser eye surgery, and eye exams as well - which are typically not covered by traditional insurance plans! Some other common claims we get are for prescription medication, professional services such as Registered Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, mental health professionals, and more.

In all cases, the receipt for the paid expense must be submitted with the claim for reimbursement. Depending on the claim, other supporting documentation may be required such as a prescription, Doctor’s note, referral, or requisition form.
