It’s been a couple of years since we checked in on the state of spending accounts in Canada’s benefits industry.

With over 250,000 myHSA users across the country, we’re happy to share some of the ways spending accounts have continued to evolve since our 2023 report.

We hope you’re able to take something from the following report.

myHSA infographic on spending accounts across Canada, with map and growth labels for Quebec +92%, Ontario +62%, Alberta +33%, BC +40%

The generation that saw the most growth was Gen Z. With 87% growth in total numbers from 2023 to 2025, this group moved from taking up just over 12% of the workforce on the myHSA platform to over 15%.

Millennials and Gen X stayed relatively consistent, while numbers among the Baby Boomers & the Silent Generation dwindled.

HSAs can be used for so much more than meets the eye, and this is being embraced by the modern workforce as claims in the Expense Not Covered* category grow.

Infographic titled Total Claims by Category shows claim growth, with Expense Not Covered up 127% and total claims +151%.

Physician services, including Prescription Drugs & Medicines rose to the top while Mental Health Professional services dropped.

In 2023, we observed the “sweet spot” for HSA plans was within the $500-1000 and $1000-2500 range. At lower or higher ranges, there was a dropoff.

In 2025, we observed myFlexplan and myWSA tend to see higher utilization than myHSA across most plan sizes, while they have a similar dropoff at lower and higher plan amounts.

2023 and 2025 line charts show average utilization by plan amount for myHSA, myWSA and myFlexplan on a teal infographic.

The average myHSA plan amount grew 53% from 2023, and the average myFlexplan amount grew 22%.

According to advisors, 72% of clients are at least somewhat familiar with HSAs, though 28% still require education support.

The three biggest barriers advisors say they face when recommending HSAs, in order, are a lack of employer awareness about HSAs, employers preferring traditional group benefits, and cost or budget constraints.

Ease of use is a key consideration for many clients. They want a platform that's simple to understand, easy to manage, and straightforward for employees to use.

Conversations about weight loss, fertility support, and financial wellness are being had more and more, but the majority of clients continue to need your direction on the foundational aspects of benefits.

If a client expresses belief in one of these myths, that's actually an opening. You can truly shine here by opening your clients’ eyes to what's possible, and we’re here to help. myHSA's website has years of educational blog content, and our Advisor Support team is here to brainstorm positioning with you, help you prepare for client conversations, and arm you with materials you can put directly in front of your clients.
